World Breastfeeding Week

You may be wondering, what has World Breastfeeding Week have to do with Kwickscreen?! Well, our sister company Lactl are celebrating, and with this being the year of their launch the festivities are especially relevant.

Celebrated globally since 1992, World Breastfeeding Week is recognised in the first week of August every year and this year is no exception. As the week comes to a close it is apparent that the emphasis on the social perception of breastfeeding within the workplace and in public spaces still needs to change.

The World Health Organisation is working with UNICEF and partners this year to promote family-friendly policies, encouraging breastfeeding and nurturing bonds early on with the hashtag #EarlyMomentsMatter.

They are putting an emphasis on the role of the workplace within their campaign, expressing the need for “enacting paid maternity leave for a minimum of 18 weeks, and paid paternity leave to encourage shared responsibility of caring for their children on an equal basis”. They are also showing how “mothers need access to a parent-friendly workplaces to protect and support their ability to continue breastfeeding upon return to work by having access to breastfeeding breaks; a safe, private, and hygienic space for expressing and storing breastmilk; and affordable childcare.”1

Lactl is on a mission to provide private spaces for breastfeeding women, hoping to remove the stigma and embarrassment that can be associated with pumping at work. By providing a comfortable, secure place supports and encourages women to balance their job as well as looking after a family. There doesn’t need to be one or the other - and no woman should ever breastfeed in a bathroom!

Just because the week is over, doesn’t mean we aren’t still advocates for supporting mothers! If you would like more information about breastfeeding in the workplace or want to help support their mission, see their website: www.lactl.com
