Have you ever experienced that disturbing feeling of other people leering at you while you are trying to exercise at the gym? Peering at other gym members while they are working out became for some people, particularly those who come to the gym for social purposes rather than for fitness, a pleasurable hobby at the disadvantage of many decent gym-goers.
Gyms Not For Everyone
If you are a self-conscious person you may find the thought of going to the gym a hard decision to make. In fact, there are many people who have developed a ‘’gym phobia’’ and avoid going to the gym in order to not to be looked at, judged or even body-shamed.
If being watched makes you feel uncomfortable and uneasy what would you say about being filmed and recorded while working out at the gym? If you think this experience is distant from reality you are barking up the wrong tree.
Do you remember a prominent case of a Playboy model who secretly took a photo of a naked 70-year-old women in a gym locker room? Honestly, who wants that? The model was subsequently banned from all the divisions of the gym and was sentenced by court for 30 days of graffiti cleaning on city streets.
The case came to light only because of the high-profile of the model who disseminated the photo to the large number of her social media followers. But how many of similar occurrences happen every day and pass unnoticed?
Women Fight For Privacy
KwickScreen has recently been asked to provide a privacy solution to one of the London gyms where the problem with privacy was particularly serious. It came out that privacy of the women was severely abused by men watching them and even recording on the phones. It became clearly uncomfortable and even unsafe for women to come to this gym any longer.
Because of the large, modern, open-plan layout of the gym, it was hard to do anything to change the configuration in the gym so that women could enjoy the privacy of their own space. To the managers, the trainers and the gym members it seemed that nothing could be done to improve the privacy of the women. Some women stopped attending certain classes and even completely gave up on the gym.
Portable, Retractable Partition Screens
One female member of the gym saw KwickScreen partition screens and suggested to use our privacy dividers to section off the areas where women are training. The gym managers reached out to us to try to use the KwickScreen - the portable, retractable partition screens.
Straight from the first visit to the gym KwickScreens made a difference. In an instant we shielded off the exercising women from the peering men and created privacy that women were seeking for for a long time.
As part of our regular procedure when visiting a new client we gather as much information as possible about the client’s problems and needs. Here is a few quotations that we gleaned after a positive trial of the screens at the gym:
’’A few members stopped coming to the class because of the guys coming and watching. (Now) It’s like a room being sectioned off, so they do prefer it, and it’s working.’’
‘’Some of the members would just come in and out and interrupt the class, but since we’ve had the screen it’s cut that out and made me feel more secure as well.’’
’’People used to just walk in, it was a disturbance because when you’re in a class session it distracts the entire routine.’’
‘’There used to be a lot of men. They used to be filming and recording us.’’
‘’The screen is really helpful and more secure.’’
‘’We are really happy that the screen is here. We have more privacy. Now we are safer.’’

Now, after the portable partition screens KwickScreen were introduced to the gym, women can come to the gym with the confidence that they will not be watched or filmed.
At KwickScreen we are proud that we could make a significant improvement to the comfort and security of the members of this gym.
